Elon Musk might be coming to Guildford… (well, sort of)
If you live in a rural pocket just outside Guildford, you’ll know the truth already: mobile signal here is less “5G future” and more “carrier pigeon with anxiety”.
In villages like Shamley Green and Cranleigh, it’s a delicate dance between Three (who occasionally show up), Honest Mobile (who kindly roam across networks but still seem emotionally committed to Three), and Vodafone built into our cars… which proudly completes 80% of calls and then gives up mid sentence like it’s had enough of modern life.
The solution
So before I fully commit to a rural rage about UK mobile connectivity, I did what any reasonable person would do. I bought a Mini Starlink.
Yes, the Starlink Mini. Elon Musk’s pocket-sized satellite internet system, now available for under £200. Allegedly designed for anywhere on Earth. For now, it’s sitting on the passenger seat like a co-pilot. Not ideal, but at least it’s trying. And to be fair, it works. Properly works. For the first time in years I can drive through the countryside and actually make a call without performing the classic “can you hear me now?” interpretive dance.
Here’s the thing though. If a small satellite receiver can fix this in minutes, what exactly are we doing with national mobile infrastructure?
We’ve got networks like Vodafone and Three slowly merging to build the biggest network in the UK and still, we are losing signal to a field shelter nearby. Meanwhile Dubai is literally managing weather, yet we can’t get more than one bar of signal through rural Surrey.
So yes, credit where it’s due. Elon Musk, fair play. You’ve built something that actually works where others have shrugged and said “not a priority area”.
So a question for residents in rural England with our supposedly decent mobile network coverage:
If Elon Musk turned up offering proper connectivity across the British countryside, are we voting yes… or are we sticking with “No Signal”?
